BREAKING NEWS: Mokotjo set to rejoin SuperSport
Kamohelo Mokotjo is set to rejoin his boyhood club SuperSport United on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old midfielder has been unattached since leaving Major League Soccer (MLS) side FC Cincinnati in December 2021 and has been training with his former club FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie.
However, the Netherlands side has not made any commitment regarding signing him. FARPost has been reliably informed that negotiations with Matsatsantsa are at an advanced stage, with the player set to link up with the team in the next few days.
“When they heard he was available, they moved quickly, and he will be joining them any minute from now. SuperSport is home for him,” a source close to the player said.
The former Bafana Bafana star cut ties with Cincinnati after a mutual agreement to end their relationship before the start of the 2022 MLS season.
Two months later, the Free State-born star resurfaced at Twente after the club allowed him to undergo his recovery programme under their supervision following a meniscal injury he sustained late last season.
Mokotjo is highly respected at the Eredivisie side after making 100 appearances in his three seasons with them. SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt will be happy to add another experienced player to his youthful squad. He recently signed Thulani Hlatshwayo, and the addition of another academy graduate would be timeous with Ronwen Williams leaving for Sundowns this week.
Mokotjo joined the SuperSport academy at the age of 12, just like Williams. Courtesy of Pretoria club’s partnership with Dutch giants Feyenoord, he was one of five youngsters sent on a three month trial in Europe. Thanks to his unparalleled technique, he landed himself a lucrative contract in 2009.
He left Feyenoord in 2013, after a loan stint at Excelsior, to join PEC Zwolle, where he lifted the 2014 Dutch Cup. FC Twente then signed him on a four-year deal worth €1.5 million (about R21.45 million back then).
The club named him captain two years later, with his impeccable leadership style earning him the nickname ‘The General’. His dream of playing in England came to manifestation in 2017 when Brentford signed him. He made 94 appearances for the English side during a three-year stay.
In August 2020, he joined the MLS side Cincinnati where he spent 14 months before the club bought out his guaranteed contract.
