Lesotho’s top coach set for study visit at Pirates, Sekhukhune
Lesotho’s Matlama FC coach Molebatsi Mothobi is said to be on his way to South Africa’s DStv Premiership for a coaching study visit at Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United.
However, there was no confirmation from Pirates on whether they were set to welcome Mothobi, who was expected to arrive in South Africa on Sunday.
On the other hand, Sekhukhune spokesperson Thina Ramantswana tells FARPost that she is unaware of Mothobi’s study visit to the club.
The Lesotho Premier League-title-winning mentor told Lesotho Post newspaper that he would spend a week learning from Pirates’ mentor Jose Riveiro and Sekhukhune’s Kaitano Tembo.
Pirates have enough experience after having won the CAF Champions League in 1995, and they were runners-up in 2015. The Soweto side also reached the Confederation Cup final for the year 2021-2022.
Tembo also gained valuable continental football experience while coaching SuperSport United.
Mothobi told the newspaper that he needed to broaden his knowledge base ahead of Matlama’s participation in the CAF Champions League.
“There is always something to learn, and you can learn anywhere,” he is quoted as saying.
“I can go to Likhopo and do this, but it is just that you cannot only learn from your competitors. This trip is for me to observe how they do their coaching and many things. I am going to have conversations on how they do things and see how they deal and solve the challenges they come across,” he added.
“Of course, with the Champions League coming, I wanted to go to these big teams and learn from them, but we are also returning for training, and I have to be there for the sessions. I cannot be away for ten days.”
Mothobi said he wanted to extend his visit to Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, but it was impossible to do so due to time constraints.
Mothobi was expected to arrive in South Africa on Sunday.
Matlama have since roped in former Lesotho coach Moses Maliehe to work with Mothobi since he has never coached on the continental stage.
At Sekhukhune, Mothobi is set to be welcomed by former Lesotho coach Thabo Senong who now works as an assistant coach at the club.
