Manchester United have finalised the acquisition of defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax Amsterdam for a reported fee of £55 million.
According to reports, Martinez will pocket £6.2 million per year for his five-year stay at Old Trafford, with the option to extend for a further year.
This breaks down to about £120,000 per week, making him the joint 10th highest earner at United, the same pay bracket as Fred and Victor Lindelof, as reported by The Sun.
The report further revealed the club’s top earners, with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the list earning the most at £480,000 per week. At the bottom of the list, Scott McTominay reportedly earns just £20,000 per week.
The players who closely follow Ronaldo at the top of the list are goalkeeper David de Gea with £375,000 per week, and winger Jadon Sancho earning £350,000 per week.
Meanwhile, amongst the defenders, Raphael Varane earns the most money, getting around £340,000 weekly, whereas captain Harry Maguire and his fellow countryman Luke Shaw earn £190,000 and £150,000 per week, respectively.
The Argentine international reunited with his former mentor Erik ten Hag, who he played under at Ajax.
The defender has made 177 career club appearances and won numerous honours, including the 2021 Copa America with Argentina and two Eredivisie titles with Ajax.
“It’s an honour to join this great football club. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment, and now that I’m here, I’m going to push myself even further,” said Martinez on signing his contract.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career, and that’s what I want to continue at Manchester United. There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that, under this manager and coaches, and together with my new teammates, we can do it.
“I want to thank Ajax and their fans for all the support they gave me. I had an unbelievable time there but feel the moment is right to test myself in another environment. Now I am at the perfect club to do this.”
The club director of football, John Murtough, divulged why they signed the 24-year-old left-footer, and he said: “Lisandro is an outstanding player who will bring further quality and experience to Erik [Ten Hag]’s squad.
“We are delighted that he has chosen to join Manchester United, and we are looking forward to seeing him develop further and help the team achieve the success we are aiming for.”
