Pirates legend tips Soweto giants to turn the corner

Former Orlando Pirates star Albert ‘Bashin’’ Mahlangu insists the Buccaneers faithful deserve a trophy as part of the clubs’ 85th birthday celebrations.

Mahlangu spent five seasons at Pirates between 1990 and 1995. During that time, the Soweto giants won the CAF Champions League title.

But over the past few seasons, Pirates have struggled to revive the old glory days, with their last Premiership title coming in 2012.

They have only won one trophy in the last eight years: the 2020 MTN 8. But with the arrival of Spaniard coach Jose Riveiro, Mahlangu is optimistic the fortunes will change.

“I think there will be a difference this season because they now have a new coach, so we will see what transpires,” said Mahlangu.

“It’s high time that Orlando Pirates win something that will make us all happy. It is not pleasing that Pirates finish a season trophyless. So, for the 85th birthday celebration, we need to make sure that we celebrate with something (trophy).

“The way the club finished last season and their squad, I think things will be better this year. He (Jose Riveiro) needs to be given a chance to see what happens because, at this moment, we have not seen what he is capable of,” added Mahlangu.

With Mamelodi Sundowns currently dominating local football, the 64-year-old has also urged both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs always to remember the jersey that goes with those two clubs.

“There is still time for Pirates and Chiefs to catch up. It’s just that I don’t know why they are intimidated by Sundowns because on the field. It’s 11v11.

“So, it’s up to them to stop giving too much respect to those people. They must forget who they are playing with. Everyone must know that they are playing for Chiefs and Pirates now, and they need to make a mark.”
