Ian Palmer’s teenage nephew joins La Masia

The late Ian Palmer’s teenage nephew Brodwyn Palmer has joined the newly promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship side MM Platinum [La Masia] on a one-year deal [with an option of one].

The 19-year-old, according to his agent – Andrew Matjila of Living the Dream Sport Agency – is excited to return closer to home. The attacking midfielder spent last season at Black Leopards, who offered him his first professional contract, as an 18-year-old.

“I think it’s an important move for the young man because he spent last season away from home; now he will be closer. His family will watch him play because he’s been in Limpopo.

“The whole of Eldorado Park will also have a chance to see him in action,” Matjila told FARPost.

His uncle, Ian Palmer, was a prolific striker for Orlando Pirates during his heydays before retiring from playing. He went on to make a name for himself as a coach and had a stint with Leopards and Maritzburg United, among other clubs, before passing on last year in July.

Interestingly, as a youngster playing Kasi tournaments, Brodwyn often featured for La Masia. “He used to play for them in the kasi tournaments, and now he gets to represent them as they play professional football,” added Matjila, whose agency manages talents like the Baroka’s Luciano Van Heerden, Mlungisi Mkhwanazi, formerly based in Finland, ex-Swallows left-back Mbonisi Chagi and Mahlatsi Mashikinya.

He honed his skills at Stars of Africa, where he spent four years before joining Black Leopards. He will be hoping to make a lasting impact in La Masia’s maiden season.

They got promoted to the second tier of South African football after winning the final of the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs held in Potchefstroom in June. Ex-Kaizer Chiefs academy star Ayanda Rorwana and Reamohetse ‘Shimi’ Lekoatsa will also play their football at the club.
