Al Ahly have announced that they will boycott domestic cup games and play league assignments in protest in Egypt due to continued questionable officiating involving the team’s games.
The team’s board arrived at the decision following the controversy that surrounded VAR’s review which denied Percy Tau a goal on Wednesday, among other questionable officiation incidents.
Al Ahly board took the hardline stance in reaction to the controversial VAR decision in the domestic league game which ended goalless against Pharco FC to dent the former’s league title hopes.
The board further resolved to play the remaining league matches under protest by featuring fringe players and youthful ones.
A statement from the club further called for the sacking of the Egyptian Football Association refereeing committee for incompetence.
The team also wants the referee who handled Wednesday’s game fired for incompetence.
“The following decisions were taken at the end of the meeting:
- Calling for the sack of EFA’s refereeing committee due to it being unfair and unjust.
- Requesting the suspension of the VAR referee of our previous league game against Pharco FC until he’s brought to question for his decisions during the game.
- Al Ahly won’t participate in the Egyptian Cup and the Egyptian Super Cup until our demands are met.
- Playing the remainder of the Egyptian Premier League games with our youth squad and our senior players, who recovered from their injuries,” reads the club’s statement.
The back-to-back draw on Wednesday left Al Ahly still in third place on the log table with a game in hand over leaders Zamalek who are 10 points clear.
The results have cast doubt on the future of the club’s coach Ricardo Soares who replaced Pitso Mosimane two months ago.
Mosimane resigned in June saying he wanted to take a break from the pressure of coaching the continent’s biggest club.
