Ex-Pirates winger to miss start of Zambia season
Zesco United coach Mumamba Numba has disclosed that ex-Orlando Pirates forward Austin Muwowo is unlikely to jump straight into action when the 2022/23 FAZ Super League season starts on August 20.
Muwowo joined the nine-time Zambian champions on a free transfer on August 7, following an unsuccessful three-year stay at Pirates.
“He will bring a different dimension to the team. He is somebody with good experience, and I think he has the capabilities to help us,” Numba said.
“All we need is to work on his fitness because he is not fit. He hasn’t been training and only started training when he joined us.
“But so far from the games that we have seen, he has shown that he is someone who can help us when he is fully fit.”
Muwowo has been training with Zesco for over a fortnight and has featured in three pre-season friendlies.
The 2019 Zambian Footballer of the Year is Zesco’s eighth pre-season arrival that also saw the Ndola club recruit another ex-PSL face in the form of former Baroka FC goalkeeper Mwenya Chibwe.
Chibwe also joined Zesco on a free transfer after Baroka released him in January.
Meanwhile, Zesco will kick off the season next Saturday away to Prison Leopards in Kabwe. The Football Association of Zambia recently released the Zambia Super League fixtures.
The season starts with the Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield tie between League winners Red Arrows and ABSA Cup winners NAPSA Stars.
Topflight newcomers FC Muza start their campaign with a tie against Green Buffaloes. At the same time, Lumwana Radiants face off with Green Eagles as Chambishi takes on ZANACO in some of the opening fixtures.
