Fair draws for Cape Town City, Royal AM in CAF inter-club competitions
DStv Premiership sides Cape Town City and Royal AM have received relatively fair draws in the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup preliminary rounds.
Eric Tinkler’s men have been drawn against AS Otoho D’Oyo from Congo Brazzaville, whereas Royal AM will take on Eswatini league giants Mbabane Highlanders. Interestingly, Highlanders is under the ownership of Tshwane-based businessman Ally Kgomongwe.
The overall winner between Cape Town City v D’Oyo will date either Black Bulls of Mozambique or Petro Atletico from Angola.
Other notable fixtures in the Champions League feature Zamalek versus Elect-Sport from Chad, Tanzania’s Simba face Malawi champions Nyasa Bullets.
First round games will take place at home on the weekend of September 9, then away on the weekend of 16, 2022.
This will be followed by the second-round matches scheduled for the weekend of October 7 at home and October 14 in the reverse fixture.
Wydad Casablanca of Morocco are the defending champions of the continental league title.
RB Berkane, also from the same North African nation, are the Confederation Cup kings.
The draw took place at CAF headquarters in Egypt on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, CAF is set to launch the much-awaited Africa Super League on Wednesday at the Arusha International Conference Centre in Tanzania.
Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, is currently in Arusha, where the event takes place at 13h00 Eastern African Time (EAT)/ 12h00 Cairo time/ 10h00 GMT and will be broadcast on several TV networks in Africa and other parts of the world including CAF streaming platforms, CAFTV (YouTube).
Since the CAF President announced the date of the launch in July 2022, there has been an air of expectation as Africa prepares for a new era that will change the face of African football and the economic fortunes of the continent.
