PSL charge Cape Town City for FNB sponsorship
Cape Town City have been officially charged by the Premier Soccer League for failing to seek approval from the leagues executive committee prior to them concluding a deal with their new sponsor FNB.
The Citizens announced the three-year partnership with the South African bank as the new title sponsor earlier this month.
But it turns out the club did not follow proper procedures and have now been summoned to a disciplinary hearing by the League.
PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed via a statement on Tuesday that the club will appear before a DC on Monday, 22 August at 18:30.
“Cape Town City football Club stands charged for failure to obtain prior approval from the PSL xecutive committee in accordance with the compliance manual prior to the conclusion of a new or an amendment sponsorship agreement with a particular bank (FNB),” said Majavu.
“In accordance with the rules, they ought to have sort and obtain approval prior to concluding the agreement. In these instances, the allegations against them are that they did it the other way round.
“They concluded the agreement and once that agreement was concluded only then they seek to approach the executive committee of the league for approval a few days later,” added Majavu.
“As always, I will keep you posted on the developments and between now and until both matters are finalised, they will be no commentary. It is important for me to emphasise that they charge levelled against Cape Town City have absolutely nothing to do with the substantive issues that are yet to be determined by the SAFA arbitration.
“It is a dispute that is currently underway and depending on the outcome thereof, it may well be that a different approach to whether or not there are charges to be preferred would follow. It is a decision that I will take only at that particular point in time.”
