Pitso says PSL teams need tactical adjustments in CAF tourneys
Former Mamelodi Sundowns’ celebrated mentor Pitso Mosimane has said the DStv Premiership teams need to make tactical adjustments if they are to win the elusive CAF Inter Club silverware.
Sundowns, Cape Town City and Royal AM will represent South Africa in the continental competitions for the 2022/23 season.
Mosimane, who has taken a sabbatical from coaching, said he was impressed with some technical aspects of the league games he has watched so far in the 2022/22 season, which is in its infancy.
The former SuperSport United coach, who is the only South African to have won three CAF Champions League titles in his career, spelt out areas the domestic clubs need to fix if they are to compete for silverware on the continent.
“I am now getting familiar with DStv Premier League. Very exciting. Lot of skill and technique. Few tactical adjustments to be improved, though, if we want to win Caf Inter club trophies. Watched few games at the weekend and yesterday’s Pirates vs Royal AM,” he tweeted.
The last time a South African team won the continental silverware was in 2016, when Sundowns bagged the CAF Champions League under the tutelage of Mosimane.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates came close to such feats in the 2021 Champions League and 2022 Confederation Cup finals but lost then Mosimane-led Al Ahly of Egypt and RB Berkane from Morocco, respectively.
Mosimane guided Al Ahly to back-to-back CAF Champions League championships in 2020 and 2021 before losing out on the third following a 2-0 defeat by Wydad Casablanca in June this year.
The former Bafana Bafana mentor parted ways with Al Ahly in June, citing pressure to deliver the goods all the time amid fixture congestion, saying he needed to take a rest.
Mosimane is now using his free time to conduct coaching clinics which have since taken him to Royal AM and Tanzania at Yanga SC.
