Siphelele Mthembu undergoes trials at Richards Bay

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates’ seasoned striker Siphelele Mthembu is reportedly trying his luck at newly-promoted DStv Premiership side Richards Bay FC.

Mthembu has been spotted at the KwaZulu-Natal-based team as he looks to find a new home after AmaZulu released him.

FARPost has gathered that Richards Bay is assessing Mthembu, who hopes to impress them before the transfer window’s closure.

There was no confirmation from Richards Bay, but the club’s coach Pitso Dladla is on record as having admitted that he was on the market hunting for a proven scorer.

Dladla spoke about the need for a finisher after their first league loss to Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend.

Mthembu is understood to be among such targets as he also enjoyed a good working relationship with coach Vasili Manoasakis.

‘Shaka Zulu’ is one of the most experienced players on the local scene, having played for Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates, Platinum Stars, Free State Stars and Cape Town City.

His experience could add value to Richards Bay, as they look for experienced strikers to create and score goals.

Mthembu was among the 15 players that Usuthu released in June this year, and he was training alone for some time in his hometown of Melmoth.

It eventually transpired that Mthembu was on Sekhukhune United and Swallows’ radar, but such interest died down.

There was also talk of the forward securing a transfer to another country on the continent, but nothing materialised.

Mthembu could be a valuable addition to the attack of the Natal Rich Boyz, who have been playing some good attacking football, but poor finishing is proving to be a challenge.

The newly promoted side has started the season quite well, only faltering against Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend. They lost 1-0 after Kaizer Chiefs converted a penalty in the second half.

They host SuperSport United on Wednesday in a DStv Premiership encounter.
