Al Ahly club board throws in towel enmasse
Al Ahly have been thrown into a mini crisis after its football club’s board of directors threw in the towel en masse on Tuesday amid growing pressure from their fans over the Egyptian sleeping giants’ worsening performance on the pitch.
The Cairo giants have the overall Al Ahly Sports Club Board then the Al Ahly Football Company Board which has resigned. The football board runs the team and is responsible for transfers of players.
The Egyptian side released a statement on Tuesday evening that Al Ahly Sports Club board of directors had accepted the football board’s decision to step down.
“Al Ahly SC board accepted the resignation of the Al Ahly Football Company’s board during their meeting that was held tonight at the club’s premises in Gezira.
“The club’s board thanks the company’s board, including Yassin Mansour, the company’s chairman, Moustafa Fahmy, the company’s vice-chairman, and Alaa Abdelsadek, the club’s board member, for their cooperation and efforts during the previous period,” the statement reads.
The Reds have since called for an extraordinary general assembly to table the resignations and elect a new board to run the team.
Al Ahly board held a meeting on Tuesday at the club’s premises in Gezira to discuss several important topics.
The meeting also made some resolutions with the overall board approving that United Media Services company “will be responding for the management of the football sector’s marketing rights for the upcoming four seasons, starting from 2022-2023 season to 2025-2026 season.”
The board also adopted the initial concept of the naming rights of their new stadium.
On the pitch, Al Ahly are enduring one of their worst seasons, as they lie on third place on the Egyptian Premier League log table with rivals Zamalek sealing their 15th league title with three games to go to the end of the season.
The team might finish the season empty handed with some fans calling for the return of celebrated South African coach Pitso Mosimane who resigned in June due to intense pressure especially from some of the club’s legends.
