What Rulani Mokwena said about Kermit Erasmus

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena remained tight-lipped on the situation of out-of-favour attacker Kermit Erasmus as his future remains subject to speculation.

Erasmus joined Sundowns at the beginning of the 2020/21 season from Cape Town City but failed to cement a regular starting berth at the club.

The 32-year-old attacker has struggled with injuries since arriving at Chloorkop, which saw him miss the better part of the last DStv Premiership campaign.

The former Orlando Pirates star has made 33 appearances in all competitions in the past two seasons scoring only five goals and contributing five assists.

The Sundowns co-coach has, however, distanced himself from exit rumours for the talisman and maintained the club would make the necessary announcement when the time permits.

“Maybe I’m not the right person to comment about Erasmus, the club will make announcements if there’s any movement in that department, but as far as I know, he is still contracted with the club,” the 35-year-old told the media.

The former Bafana Bafana international has fallen further down to the pecking order as Thabiso Kutumela and Peter Shalulile remain the preferred duo to lead the Sundowns striking force.

The Gqeberha-born striker is yet to make the matchday squad for the 2016 CAF Champions League winners in the new season.

Interestingly, jersey number 11, which belonged to the goal-poacher, has been allocated to the newly signed Chile international Marcelo Allende, who scored on debut against Stellenbosch at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

“It’s normal for players to change jersey numbers in the new season; Rushine [De Reuck] is wearing a new jersey number, Grand[Kekana] also, and Tebogo Mokoena, so it happens all the time. It’s nothing new,” concluded the coach.

According to reports, Erasmus has requested to leave on loan citing that he wants to play regular football elsewhere.
