Banyana star comes off bench to score winner on debut in Mexico

Banyana Banyana star Jermaine Seoposenwe came off the bench to score the winner on her debut for Mexican club FC Juárez Femenil on Thursday.

The 28-year-old scored barely two minutes after her introduction for FC Juárez Femenil as they beat previously unbeaten Chivas 1-0.

“Picking up where I left off,” the South African tweeted after the match.

The result saw Juarez move to position 12 of the 16-member league in Mexico.

The South African moved to Mexico after cutting ties with Portugal’s SC Braga.

The Mexican club announced the arrival of the Banyana Banyana ace on Tuesday night, which was followed by her tweet saying she was excited for the challenge.

The 28-year-old played over 40 games for Braga and scored some crucial goals, which won them the Portuguese Cup and the Taxa da Liga trophies in the past two seasons.

Her best season came in the 2021/22 term as she found the back of the net eight times and assisted another seven goals.

But following the move, she says she wants to achieve the goals the team has set.

Juarez becomes the South African’s fourth club since leaving her native country. She initially joined Lithuanian side Gintra Universitetas before moving to Real Betis in Spain.

Following a brief spell in the Spanish Primeira Liga, she moved to Braga, where she wrote her name in the club’s history books through her exploits on the field of play.

On the international stage, Seoposenwe has represented South Africa on 78 occasions and scored 16 goals in the process.

She has played for Banyana at several Africa Women’s Cup of Nations as well as the Fifa Women’s World Cup in 2019 (France).

The versatile star was one of the stars who helped the Cosafa nation clinch the 2022 Women’s Nations Cup held in Morocco.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis will be happy to see her get a move to a competitive league as she plans for the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup.
