Why Sede Dion is key to Marumo Gallants
Marumo Gallants head coach Romain Folz believes striker Sede Junior Dion will be key to their fortunes this season and has urged his charges to create goal-scoring opportunities for him.
Gallants have struggled in front of goals this season, scoring three goals in their five opening matches.
Their goals came via Phillip Ndlondlo, Celimpilo Ngema and the Ivory Coast striker, Dion.
The 28-year-old was a key player for the Nedbank finalists. He scored six goals in 25 matches. His performances last season attracted interest from local teams and abroad, with reports that Soweto giants Orlando Pirates were after his signature.
But Folz insists it’s not only Dion’s responsibility to help the team score goals but the entire team.
“Regarding Dion, I think he is a very good striker. The fact that we don’t score as many goals as we would like is. I think it’s an entire team not only relying on him, I think it’s an entire team that needs to perform a little better,” said the Marumo Gallants mentor.
“Dion is a good player; we need to feed him more in better situations for him to perform. I will go as far as telling you that the problem for me is not us not scoring or not scoring enough. The problem is that we give the opportunity. We give gifts to the opponents to score against us. The opponents don’t give gifts to us.
“To come back to Dion, we need to feed him better, and it’s going to happen, but the fact that we should score more doesn’t imply that he is not doing enough. I think it’s an entire team issue that we need to work on,” he said.
Marumo Gallants recently signed well-travelled striker Ranga Chivaviro. Last season, Marumo scored only 22 goals while conceding 28.
