Khune reacts to his return to Chiefs starting XI

Seasoned goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has reacted to his long-awaited return to action for Kaizer Chiefs’ starting XI on Sunday during the MTN8 quarterfinal action against Stellenbosch FC.

In reaction, Khune tweeted: “Thank you all for the love and support… such great honour to always represent #KhosiNation &.”

The former Bafana Bafana number one manned the posts when Chiefs saw off Stellenbosch 4-3 on post-match penalties after extra-time to reach the MTN8 semifinal.

Khune justified calls for his return to action by making two excellent saves to ensure Chiefs win in the quarterfinal game.

The goalie dived to keep out penalty shots from Van Rooyen then William Likuta of Stellenbosch. Khune last played for Amakhosi at a similar stage last season.

The custodian has since Sunday been the subject of debate on social media, with many vouching for his return to regular action.

The keeper has seen little action, with coach Arthur Zwane opting for Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Peterson.

Mexico-based Banyana Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposenwe reacted to Khune’s performance by saying he was still at his best.

”The Man Ain’t Done Yet!,” the Juarez FC new signing tweeted.

Chiefs also seized the moment to put Khune’s appearance into context: “What a Great Honour, Khosi Family. Khune is the only Chiefs player since the start of the PSL in 1996-97 to feature in at least one game for the Club in 16 successive seasons.”

During the game, Sihle Nduli put Stellenbosch ahead in the eighth minute before Ashely du Preez equalized in the 58thminute to send the game into extra time.

Chiefs now date in-form AmaZulu at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg in the semifinal of the knock-out cup on September 3 2022. AmaZulu beat Cape Town City in the quarterfinal stage to reach the semi-final.
