Lamin Kaba Bajo re-elected as Gambia FF President

President of The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Lamin Kaba Bajo has been re-elected to run the affairs of football in the West African country for yet another term.

Bajo was elected for another four-year term during the elections on Saturday, 27 August, in Banjul, the capital of Gambia.

Earlier this month, he was elected the West African Football Union (WAFU A) President.

The 57-year-old won the polls with 51 votes, while his opponent and former executive colleague Sadibou Kamaso pulled 25 votes from the 77 available votes. There was no invalid vote.

The former Sports Minister will have Bakary Jammeh, Ebou Faye, Numukunda Kanyi and Sainabou Cham as first, second, third and fourth vice presidents, respectively.

John Frank Mendy, Ismaila S. Ceesay, Arret Njie Jah and Maimuna Kanteh were elected to serve in the executive until 2026.

“I want to call on my colleagues in Team Restore Confidence that we believe we all have the same objectives on developing Gambian Football,” Bajo said.

Kaba Bajo has been president of the GFF since September 2014. In 2012 the Gambia’s sports ministry sacked the entire country’s Football Association.

The move came two days after the Scorpions lost the first leg of their first round 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-1 at home to Algeria.

At that time, The Gambia, a tiny country of just under two million, had never qualified for a Nations Cup or World Cup tournament.

Before Kaba was appointed the Supremo of Gambian football, The Gambia had already faced a two-year sanction from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to age cheating in a CAF U20 qualifying game against Liberia.

But in 2021, The Gambia qualified for their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations tournament in their history. They made an impressive debut at the Afcon finals in Cameroon by beating Mauritania 1-0 in their opening Group F encounter and went as far as the quarterfinal stage.
