What Arthur Zwane demanded from Itumeleng Khune before Stellenbosch tie

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has revealed what he demanded from former Bafana Bafana number one Itumeleng Khune ahead of the MTN8 quarterfinal against Stellenbosch on Sunday.

Khune finally got the nod ahead of Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Peterson and did not disappoint, saving two penalties to send Chiefs to the semifinal of the MTN8 Cup.

Zwane is happy with Khune’s performance and Sifiso Hlanti, who was also returning after a long-term injury.

Khune was a hero sending Amakhosi to the semis, saving two penalties following a one-all stalemate after 120 minutes.

“The cup game presented us with the opportunity to have a look at a player like [S’fiso] Hlanti, who has been out for quite some time,” Zwane told the media.

“I’m impressed with his performance. He did very well and gave us that balance we were looking for. We played Reeve [Frosler] on the left, a right-footed player. We had that balance though we still lacking [at the back].”

“We needed to give Itu [Itumeleng Khune] the opportunity because he’s been working very hard. Also, I wanted him to show a bit of hunger and desire.

“A fully fit Itu can give you a lot of things on the field. He can lead the team and inspire a lot of youngsters.”

“Fortunately, he came to the party after quite some time of not playing. He showed his leadership skills and commitment and led the team from the back.

“It’s good to have him back; that’s the Itu I want to see going forward. We here for him, to help boost his confidence.”

Despite being solid at the back against Stellies, Zwane revealed which areas they still need to fix in their defence.

“[The match] taught us how we have to set up from dead ball situations. It’s one of the key things we need to work on and try to improve very quickly,” Zwane added.

Heading into the semis, the Soweto giants will face rivals Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu or Mamelodi Sundowns, who were all victorious.
