Ex-SuperSport striker says injury cost him AmaTuks deal

Former SuperSport United striker Atusaye Nyondo has disclosed that an injury cost him an opportunity to rejoin University of Pretoria FC earlier this year.

Nyondo told FARPost that he suffered a long-term injury two days before signing a contract with the AmaTuks.

“I came back to Malawi three months ago from South Africa. The thing is that when I was about to sign a contract with the University of Pretoria on a Monday, I got Achilles on a Saturday, and that is how I lost that opportunity,” he tells FARPost.

The former Malawian international added that he has since recovered from the injury and is training on his own in Malawi.

“I have been on training since for my recovery. I have stayed seven months [without playing competitive football]. I am just trying to look around where I can get a team, then I will take it from there,” the former Silver Strikers player, Atusaye Nyondo, said.

The former Malawian international’s last flirtation with South African football was in the Motsepe Foundation Championship at Pretoria Callies last year.

Nyondo hit the headlines in the year 2020 when he successfully won a case against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzihandila over unpaid dues.

The South Africa Football Players Union had represented Nyondo in seeking the intervention of Fifa over breach of contract, and the world football governing body eventually ruled in favour of the striker.

The 32-year-old Malawian signed for St George FC in Ethiopia in 2019, but he only stayed with the Addis Ababa-based club for six months before leaving.

Atusaye Nyondo signed for Bloemfontein Celtic in 2016 after leaving Amatuks following their relegation.

The Malawian made a name with Carara Kicks FC in 2011 when he won the Golden Boot Award for the then National First Division with 16 goals.

He eventually signed for SuperSport and won the Golden Boot Award for the Tshwane-based club. Stints with Bloemfontein then University FC.
