Desiree Ellis on what Banyana need to fix against Brazil

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has picked one thing they need to fix when they play Brazil in Durban on Monday.

Ellis bemoaned the team’s failure to convert chances when they were thrashed 3-0 by Brazil at Orlando Stadium in a high-profile friendly match.

Despite creating a fair amount of goal-scoring opportunities in the opening few minutes of the game, the reigning African champions couldn’t capitalise on the chances.

“We wanted to play our game. We wanted to come out of this game being proud of ourselves. I thought we rotated the ball well. Defensively, in the beginning, I thought we were a little bit shaky, but we managed to sort that out, and to concede two goals right at the end of the first half was criminal.”

She believes if they are to get a positive result, they will have to be more clinical in front of goal.

“I thought that we created few chances, especially with Hildah [Magaia] having that one chance, and that’s where we have to be a little more clinical.

“And in the second half, I thought we played really well as well, created a lot of chances on transition, our final ball in the final third was a little bit poor,” the 58-year-old told the media at Orlando Stadium.

The three-time Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Coach of the Year will be hoping for positive results when they face the same opponents on Monday at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Banyana preparing

“There’s not enough time to prepare for the next game on Monday. We will just work on recovery. Whenever we play at Moses Mabhida, there’s always a good turnout from supporters. So we hope that works in our favour,” added the Cape Town-born mentor.

Banyana are preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
