Ex-Sundowns winger Miquissone joins Saudi team
Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Luis Miquissone has joined Abha SC in the Saudi Arabia Pro League on loan from Al Ahly.
The Mozambican midfielder has become the first high-profile player to leave the troubled Al Ahly.
The 27-year-old signed for Al Ahly last season from Simba in Tanzania to reunite with his former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane.
However, the resignation of Mosimane in June this year cast doubt on the future at the Cairo club of most players that he signed, including former Sundowns’ star Percy Tau.
Miquissone and Tau were among the players the Club of the Century were said to have placed on the transfer list last month due to unimpressive performances.
The Mozambican’s exit renders credence to the reports of the transfer-list players even though Al Ahly are yet to confirm officially.
Miquissone scored once in Al Ahly’s last season match when they beat Cleopatra FC 4-0 on Tuesday.
It was his fifth goal in 28 games across all competitions for the struggling Egyptian club football powerhouse.
Al Ahly finished in an unenviable third place on the Egyptian Premier League log table, the first time they have had to settle for a place outside the top-two positions since 1992.
The poor finish to the season cost the job of Mosimane’s successor Ricardo Soares who was sacked soon after the Cleopatra match played on Tuesday.
After the league match, the Mozambican tweeted: “Last match of the season. Last goal of the season. Thank you all.”
The Mambas senior player has reunited with his former coach at Simba, Sven Vandenbroeck, who is in charge of Abha.
The diminutive player will link up with fellow African players on the Saudi side, such as Cameroonian goalkeeper Devis Eppasy.
The Saudi club finished position nine on the 16-member log table last season.
