How KZN side plans to tackle unemployment through PSL
ABC Motsepe League side chairman Welcome Mpanza has highlighted the importance of promoting the club to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as they prepare for the new season in the third-tier league.
Umsinga United were among the best teams in the KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League. They concluded stream B in the 2021/22 season in second place, behind Friends FC, suffering defeat in the last round of matches.
A victory would’ve seen them face Summerfield Dynamos. The latter won stream A in the final of the KZN division for a place in the national playoffs, where the top two sides gain promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The club’s chairman Mpanza believes the appointment of Doctor Mkhonza as the new head coach will turn their fortunes around.
Mpanza says he is very confident about his club’s chances of gaining promotion to the PSL team, provided Mkhonza gets off to a start well.
“Last season we worked very hard; we finished in the second spot behind Friends FC. We saw changes after appointing our coach Doctor, who helped us change our performances, after not starting very well last season and this season we aim to start well,” Mpanza tells FARPost.
Mpanza is of the view that getting promoted from the amateur ranks to the PSL will not only be good for the club but will also contribute to the community and the economy, as the local government will have to build better facilities that can meet the standard of the PSL and create more opportunity for youth.
“As a club, we want to gain promotion and grow this club. But that will depend on how we perform and our luck because, in football, it is all about consistency and luck,” he added.
“We want to achieve that to inspire our youth in Umsinga and develop the area because having a PSL team can motivate the government to build infrastructure for sport.
“We have some good players, like Miseni Ndlovu, Siphokazi Mbatha and Inganathi. We want Umsinga United to become the first team from Umzinyathi to play in the PSL, starting with the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the DStv Premiership.”
