Sinenjabulo Zungu reveals when AmaZulu will launch women’s team
AmaZulu FC CEO Sinenjabulo Zungu has revealed when the club will launch its women’s side, explaining why there has been a delay in the process.
Women’s football in South Africa has gained more attention after Banyana Banyana made history by winning their first Women’s African Cup of nations (WAFCON) title in July.
With the women’s game on the rise, several Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams have promised to join the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and TS Galaxy in establishing ladies’ teams with Royal AM becoming the third and latest side in the DStv Premiership to have a women’s team as they bought the status of Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies in July.
Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu have been planning to form women’s teams for the last few months as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) sent out a directive which requires teams competing in the CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League to have women’s teams as from the 2022/23 season.
On Tuesday, during their new store launch at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Usuthu explained their delay in having the women’s team with a promise that by the end of this season, the club should have an AmaZulu Ladies side as they look to qualify for the Champions League.
“We are not far from that; we have plans of introducing the women’s team as soon as possible,” Zungu told FARPost.
“Look, last season we didn’t finish in the top three to qualify for CAF Competition; we then delayed the process, but I can assure you when we return to African tournaments, we will have a women’s side.”
It is also believed that Usuthu were in talks with one of the Durban teams to buy their status, which might be one of the delays, according to inside sources.
However, AmaZulu and the Durban side in question refused to comment on the matter.
