Malawian defender Chaziya finds his feet in Jordanian League

Malawian top defender Lawrence Chaziya has said he has finally found his feet at Jordanian Pro League side, Al Hussein Irbid SC, in his debut season.

Chaziya told FARPost that he had adjusted quickly to the fast game of the Jordanian league where he joined from Civil Service United in Lilongwe.

“I have been playing regularly since April when the league kicked off. I think I have taken my game to another level by playing here. I play either as a centre-back or right-back depending on the game-plan and opposition we are up against,” he tells FARPost.

The youthful centre-back, who is capped five times with the Flames, signed a 10-month contract with Irbid in February this year.

The 24-year-old Malawian has two months remaining on his deal with Irbid.

He said contract negotiations are yet to start with the Jordanian side which has of late been chopping and changing coaches. The team’s current coach is Ayman Hakeem.

“We are yet to open to discussions over contract renewal. Our team has changed four coaches in a short period of time and as a result, we have drawn many games hence the reason we are in number three. We will see whether I will extend the contract or not,” Chaziya said.

Irbid have 36 points from 16 games of five draws and one loss and lie two points behind leaders Al-Faisaly.

The team, which has on its book Congolese defender Botuli Bompunga, next face Al Arabi on September 15 in the Jordanian FA Cup round of 16 match.

The Jordanian team spotted Chaziya from his eye-catching performances for the Flames of Malawi at the delayed 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon.

The one-time SuperSport United target had only played one friendly against Comoros going to the AFCON finals.

Chaziya went on to replace injured defender Limbikani Mzava in the second group game against Zimbabwe and took over the sweeper’s role.

Chaziya was among the AFCON discoveries for the Flames who reached the round of 16 for the first time in Malawi football history, thanks to the exploits of then Orlando Pirates star Gabadinho Mhango.

The AmaZulu recent signing Mhango scored three goals in three games at AFCON to become Malawi all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
