Chippa Mpengesi breaks silence on Klate axe
Chippa United boss Siviwe Mpengesi has broken his silence on coach Daine Klate being shown the exit door at the club most recently.
The Eastern Cape outfit dominated headlines again for firing a coach, abruptly ending their relationship with Klate last Thursday.
Klate, who is a former Orlando Pirates winger, confirmed his departure, stating that he is relieved to be relieved of his coaching duties.
The young coach was fired seven matches into the 2022/23 season, winning only a single win with four defeats and two draws.
He left Chippa at the basement of the DStv Premiership with a mere five points.
It was his first coaching stint professional level after taking charge at Chippa’s reserves side in the Diski Challenge.
CHIPPA EXPLAINS…
Mpengesi, known for lacking patience with coaches as he demands results straightway, received a lot of backlash, with many accusing the club of not giving local boy, Klate a fair chance and support.
However, the Chippa boss explained why the club had to let go of the coach Klate.
He also dismissed talks that suggested that the Chilli Boys were playing negative football under the previous coaches.
“We gave Daine Klate a chance; remember, he comes from the background of playing negative football,” Mpengesi told FARPost.
A few days after Klate was fired, Chippa pulled off a shock 2-1 win against AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“He worked a lot with Gavin Hunt, where there’s no positive football, just parking the bus, nothing else; unfortunately, here at Chippa, we don’t do that.”
Meanwhile, the trigger-happy chairman added that the club will make an announcement about the new technical team sometime this week.
“We haven’t made any announcement; we will meet with the board and make a decision on the way forward,” declared Mpengesi.
And with a win against AmaZulu, the boss says the club showed more hunger. They were totally a different side from what they were under Klate.
“You saw when we played AmaZulu, the team was different from what we saw against [Mamelodi Sundowns [we lost the game], it shows that we made a good decision,” he concluded.
