Bimenyimana scores brace as Chiefs edge SuperSport
A brace by Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana was enough to throw Kaizer Chiefs a lifeline after an inconsistent start to the season.
Prior to Saturday’s 2-1 win over SuperSport United, Chiefs had last won a league match on 20 August, a 1-0 over Richards Bay.
With coach Arthur Zwane under pressure to get results, after collecting eight points out of a possible 21, his new man, Bimenyimana, proved the hero of the day, scoring a goal in either half.
The first 10 minutes of the first half were a balanced affair, with no real goal threat from either of the teams.
In the 11th minute, Kgaogelo Sekgota skied his effort from outside the box. Five minutes later, on-loan midfielder Grant Margerman put SuperSport ahead after drilling a low shot into the bottom left corner.
In the 20th minute, SuperSport could have capitalised on an Itumeleng Khune miscalculation, but Hlanti was on hand to head the ball out for a corner kick.
Thereafter, Chiefs looked disjointed after conceding the goal, with no meaningful forays upfront. They hardly looked like a team eager to draw level.
In the 34th minute, Bimenyimana, who was making his first start, could have drawn them level, but he skied his left foot attempt.
The Burundian international got it right in the 39th minute, opening his DStv Premiership account off a Sekgota cross.
Chiefs took back control after the equaliser, ending the first half on a high. They continued enjoying the better share of possession in the early stages of the second half.
One of their forays into the opposition half resulted in Yusuf Maart being fouled in the box. Up stepped Bimenyimana, who sent Ricardo Goss the wrong way in the 54th minute.
