Why Tshabalala feels need to remind everyone Sundowns are African champions
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies must be beginning to fear that history will repeat itself as they are gearing up for their Hollywoodbets Super League clash against the University of the Western Cape (UWC) at Tuks Stadium on Sunday, 18 September.
The much-awaited showdown will kick off at 11:30 in the morning.
UWC was the first team to put a stop to the defending champions Sundowns Ladies’ unbeaten league record with a shock 2-0 defeat back in May 2022 since the formation of the Super League.
The red-hot Brazilians will go into this game seeking revenge even though it will be a mammoth test for them to get the maximum points.
At that time, the club’s head coach Jerry Tshabalala had described their defeat to the Cape club as a “stark reminder of the task they have ahead of the season.”

“That defeat was a stark reminder. Now, we are looking forward to the next fixture because we need to remind everyone that we are the continental champions,” Kappa said after the loss to UWC back then.
However, with the Super League returning from a mini-break due to the COSAFA Women’s Championships, Banyana Ba Style midfielder Thalea Smidt had said the break will help them to get the much-needed rest.
The Tshwane giants have been playing almost twice every week to catch up with other teams in the league after their COSAFA zonal qualifier final disappointment.
“This is a perfect opportunity for us to catch our breath. The plan is to reassess ourselves and reflect on our performances thus far,” said Smidt.
“The team has suffered several injuries in the last few weeks, and we hope to be fully healthy ahead of our next game. The season is far from over and everyone within the team knows this.”
The Banyana star is confident that her side will be able to continue where they had left off before the mini-break.
Since their resumption of league games after the COSAFA qualifiers, the Tshwane-based side thrashed Golden Ladies with a 7-1 win which was followed by a 1-0 victory over Durban Ladies.
A 7-0 win was recorded against Tsunami Queens thereafter a 3-0 win over City Lads Ladies.
As things stand, Masandawana are flourishing on the summit of the table with 45 points after 16 games, and scored a league-high 72 goals and conceded only nine goals in the process.
