Chiefs fans show class at Botswana women’s team captain’s wedding

Some Kaizer Chiefs supporters showed their class by gracing Botswana women’s football team skipper Bonang Mosethla’s wedding over the weekend.

The Botswana’s Mares defender exchanged marriage vows with her sweetheart Kaone Mosetlha on Saturday afternoon in the capital, Gaborone.

Greater Botswana Kaizer Chiefs Branch members, clad in their traditional gold and black, presented a Chiefs replica jersey to Bonang Mosethla at the wedding reception.

“Congratulations to one of our own…The Mares captain Bebeto Otlhagile saying “I do” today Love and peace from the Greater Botswana Branch,” the fans wrote on their Facebook page.

The fans’ gesture was in recognition of the fact that Bonang is reportedly a staunch supporter of Amakhosi.

The group comprises 946 Chiefs fans who often travel to South Africa to witness DStv Premiership games.

The fans have since indicated that they will witness the forthcoming Soweto derby against rivals Orlando Pirates on October 30 2022.

Chiefs are considered the most followed team in South Africa and beyond, with a fan base estimated at 40 million.

The Amakhosi supporters on social media are roughly six million, according to online media reports.

Botswana Football Association has also since sent its goodwill message to the Mares captain for exchanging the marriage vows.

“Congratulations to The Mares Captain Mrs Bonang Mosetlha and Mr Kaone Mosetlha on your wedding day. We wish you a happy married life,” the association said in a statement.

Before getting married, the centre-back was known by her maiden name Bonang Otlhagile.

She led the history-making Botswana women’s team that qualified for its first major event.

Otlhagile led the Mares to the 2022 Women’s AFCON held in Morocco in July this year.

The Mares not only participated in the tournament but also competed strongly at the continental event.

Botswana reached the quarterfinal stage of WAFCON before losing 2-1 to hosts Morocco.
