Former Jose Mourinho’s assistant apologizes to Highlanders

Ex-Jose Mourinho‘s assistant coach Baltemar Brito has apologised to Highlanders fans for letting them down as the club will end the season without silverware.

Highlanders’ hopes of accounting for some silverware this season were dashed when they were bundled out of the Chibuku Super Cup following a slender 1-0 defeat to Bulawayo Chiefs.

On the other hand, the league title is already out of their reach, but a top-four finish is still achievable with seven games remaining before the curtain goes down.

Brito, however, feels he should have done better in his maiden season at the helm of the Zimbabwean giants, Highlanders.

“How can you explain a weak performance like that after a good impression at training during the week?” Brito said.

“We say sorry to the fans and everyone who supports Highlanders. We say sorry to the leadership. This was a week of going down.

“Everyone expected better from us, but we failed to deliver. I can’t blame anyone, but as the coach, I take responsibility for the outcomes of every game. We should have done better.

“What’s left is to end the season on a good position as we build up for the next season. I hope we will be at our best to be winners.”

Ultimately Highlanders will end the season with the invitational independence trophy, which they won then under Mandla Mpofu back in April.

However, hopes are high that Brito will turn a corner for the Bulawayo giants next season if they retain his services.

Prior to the Chibuku Super Cup exit, Highlanders boosted of a seven-match unbeaten run in both competitions.

How they will fare until the season ends remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Harare giants Dynamos were also booted out of the cup competition by FC Platinum.

They will now hope to exert full force in a bid to win this season’s title, although they are eight points behind leaders FC Platinum.
