Former Leopards midfielder responds to muthi claims
Former Black Leopards midfielder Raymond Monama has refuted claims that he, together with Khethokwakhe Masuku and Tiyani Mabunda were once dropped from the club for refusing to use muthi before a match.
The claims, which have since gone viral, were made by Masuku on the YouTube channel TK Solutions TV last week.
Masuku alleges that while at Leopards, players would be forced to use muthi or be dropped from the team if they refuse.
“I said I am not going to allow them to do that. I will rather be taken out of the team,” Masuku told the channel.
The 36-year-old says he, Monama and Mabunda were the only players who stood up against the club.
But Monama, who spent three seasons at Lidoda Duvha, says his experience at the club was different from Masuku’s.
“Obviously I can’t comment on what anyone says because everyone has their comments. We don’t go through the same things. From my side no, I have never experienced such while I was at the club,” said Monama.
“The treatment was always perfect for me. I am where I am because of him (David Thidiela) and I appreciate everything.
“In every team, there are instances where you play, and sometimes you drop to the bench. So, I did not play in a lot of games because I was not guaranteed the starting position, nothing else.
“I don’t even know about those things (muthi). The only thing I know is that any player could be dropped from time to time depending on different games. So, it was part of football,” he said.
Monama, who has played for clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, University of Pretoria and Polokwane City, is currently unattached after parting ways with Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs).
Meanwhile, Leopards Chairman David Thidiela refused to comment on the claims saying he doesn’t have time for ‘funny things’.
