Former Baroka striker rejoins Malawi army side

Former Baroka striker Richard Mbulu has rejoined Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) FC on a free transfer.

Mafco spokesperson Mike Uzale confirmed to FARPost that the 29-year-old had joined on a free transfer.

“He is an employee of the MDF and he has since returned to work now that his contract with Baroka has expired. We have registered him and he might feature for us this weekend,” Uzale said.

Mbulu has been a free agent since June this year when his contract at Baroka expired.

Mbulu was linked with a move to an Iraqi side Al-Najaf but reports suggest that the move fell through because he is a serving soldier.

MALAWI ARMY REFUSAL TO CLEAR HIM

Reports say the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) refused to clear Mbulu to join Al-Najaf and instead asked him to resign from the army.

In the end, the Flames striker opted for the long-term security that the MDF job offers since football is a short-term career.

MBULU OPTS AGAINST BAROKA NEW CONTRACT

Mbulu decided against renewing his contract with Baroka after they were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

He scored three goals across all competitions for Baroka in the last campaign.

He was also on the verge of signing for Golden Arrows but the deal did not materialize due to some differences.

Mbulu also tried his luck with Zesco United but the former Zambian league champions were not impressed with him during the two-week trials.

Mbulu won the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award in the 2016/2017 season with 19 goals in 30 games.

The Flames striker is set to return to action this weekend for Mafco who are on fourth place on the Super League log table with eight games to go.

Before joining Baroka, Mbulu played for Mozambican side Costa do Sol for three seasons until the year 2019.

The former Mozambique champions loaned Mbulu out to Portuguese lower league team Sanjoanense for some months in the year 2018 before he rejoined the Maputo-based club.

Mbulu’s goal in the 1-0 win over Uganda last year earned Malawi a place at the delayed 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon.

The striker has since lost his place in the Flames squad under new coach Mario Marinica who replaced Meck Mwase.
