Maema singles out silverware Sundowns must win

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema has revealed the silverware the Tshwane giants must to win this season.

The star-studded team has been dominant in the past seasons winning trophies, however there’s one trophy they seem to be struggling to clinch.

In the 2022/23 season they continued with their dominance in the domestic league. They clinched a treble; the MTN8, DStv Premiership and the Nedbank Cup.

However, Masandawana failed to impress in the CAF Champions League.

They were booted out of the African elite club football competition in the quarter finals by Angolan giants Petro de Luanda. They lost 2-1 away then were held to a one all draw at home.

SUNDOWNS MAJOR OBJECTIVE

Maema therefore vows that CAF Champions League will be their major objective this season.

The Tshwane giants will be aiming to replicate the performances the put in 2016 season as they won the African trophy under the guidance of coach Pitso Mosimane. They defeated Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate.

“We are gearing up for the busy term ahead as we plan to defend our titles and aim for continental glory,” Maema told the club’s magazine.

“Restoring Mamelodi Sundowns to the pinnacle of African football is one of the major objectives for the season/

“I came to Chloorkop to improve my chances of winning silverware and challenge myself. Before moving to Sundowns, I had never won any trophies in my professional career and winning the domestic treble in my maiden season is something to cherish.”

Maema went on to reveal how his ability to use both feet when playing helps him.

“As a footballer, you need to work on your weaknesses; that is why I feel comfortable using both feet.

“This coming campaign, I want to contribute more goals and assists. Who knows, maybe I might get a few more memorable strikes,” Maema concluded.

Masandawana were drawn against La Passe FC of Seychelles in the preliminary round two. A victory for them over the two-legged affair will see Sundowns progressing to the group stages of the competition.
