Malawian star Tabitha Chawinga scores to send Inter Milan top
Malawian striker Tabitha Chawinga scored once to send Inter Milan women’s football team to the summit of Seria A Women’s League on Sunday.
Chawinga was on target alongside Bonneti as Inter beat Samprodia 2-0 at Centro Sportivo Tre Campanili in Bogliasco.
Milan lead the 10-member log table with 10 points from four games, one point ahead of Roma, thanks to the exploits of the Malawian.
Inter’s next match is on Friday away to Como as they seek to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.
SCORING FORM
It was Chawinga’s fourth goal in four games since joining the Italian giants on a season-long loan from Wuhan Jiangda FC in the Chinese Women’s Super League.
The Malawi’s women’s football team skipper flew back to Italy on Saturday, a day after winning Malawi Sportswoman of the Year Award back home in Lilongwe.
LONG TRIP FROM MALAWI
The long trip did not deter Chawinga who had yet another splendid game against the hosts Samprodia.
Overall, Chawinga has only failed to score once in the four games for Inter.
She announced her arrival in Italy by scoring on her debut for Inter as they beat FC Parma 4-1 last month.
A week later, Chawinga then bagged a brace in a six-goal thriller between Inter and Juventus.
The 26-year-old moved to Italy last month from China where she was playing at Jiangda alongside her younger sister Temwa who is still with the Chinese club.
The dreadlocked forward launched her career at DD Sunshine FC before Temwa followed suit to sign for the Lilongwe-based team.
Chawinga eventually moved to the third-tier Swedish league side, Krokom/Dvarsatts IF, in 2014, becoming the first Malawian woman footballer to sign for a European team.
The Malawi skipper scored 39 goals in 14 games despite missing five games as she had not yet turned 18, which is the minimum age for professional footballers.
Chawinga then secured a move to China where she first signed for Jiangsu Suning before moving to Jiangda.
