Malawi League top scorers: Bullets’ Babatunde leads Golden Boot race

Nigerian forward Babatunde Adepoju scored his 12th goal of the season to maintain his place in the Malawi TNM Super League top scorers’ chart on Wednesday.

His team Nyasa Big Bullets floored toothless Red Lions 3-1 in Malawi’s TNM Super League game to fly 11 points clear on Wednesday afternoon.

Bullets have 55 points from 21 games, with nine matches to go, whereas second-placed Kamuzu Barracks have 44 points from 23 games or seven games remaining for them.

Bullets went into the match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre with a positive vibe following last Sunday’s 4-0 demolition of rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in the FDD Cup semifinal.

Zimbabwean coach Kalisto Pasuwa refreshed his starting line-up a bit with Nixon Nyasulu starting in defence ahead of John Lanjesi, whereas Precious Sambani made way for Alick Lungu.

The left-back Lungu justified his selection with a 31st-minute goal to level matters.

Moses Nankhumba had scored first for the soldiers in the 25th minute to ensure the two teams went to break locked at 1-1.

When play restarted, Bullets, who are chasing an unprecedented 16th league title and fourth on the trot for Pasuwa, upped the tempo.

Little wonder, last season’s top scorer Hassan Kajoke headed in to put Bullets ahead in the 53rd minute.

Thereafter, the show was left for the league’s leading scorer Babatunde to beat the offside trap and score with two minutes to full-time.

It was the Nigerian’s 12th league goal in 21 games this season.

Adepoju also scored the last goal for Bullets over the weekend.

The elite league in Malawi comprises 16 teams, with the bottom three relegated and replaced by three regional league champions.

Mobile phone service provider TNM sponsors the league established in 1986.

Bullets have won the most 16 league titles, followed by Silver Strikers at eight, then Wanderers’ six.
