Mixed fortunes for former Baroka stars Mbulu, Ngalande

Former Baroka FC strikers Robin Ngalande and Richard Mbulu had a weekend of contrasting fortunes in the Malawi’s TNM Super League.

Ngalande’s Mighty Mukuru Wanderers beat Richard Mbulu’s Mafco 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday to move to fourth place.

MIXED FORTUNES

Ngalande, who was with Baroka in the 2017/18 season, made his debut for Wanderers the previous weekend.

Mbulu, who left Baroka at the end of last season, Mbulu led Mafco’s frontline.

In last weekend’s game, the former Baroka player came off the bench as Wanderers lost 4-0 to Bullets in the FDH Cup semifinal.

Sunday’s win saw Wanderers move up to fourth place with 40 points from 21 games, thanks to Isaac Kaliyati’s delightful freekick.

The Mark Harrison-coached Wanderers are six points behind third-placed Blue Eagles.

BULLETS LEAD SLASHED

Wanderers are 16 points behind leaders and holders Nyasa Big Bullets, who were in action against Civil Service on Sunday.

Striker Innocent Tanganyika’s late goal for Civil denied the leaders Big Bullet a win at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Tanganyika scored in the 77th minute to cancel out Anthony Mfune’s 21st-minute goal for Bullets in the game, which ended 1-1.

The rare home draw for Bullets reduced their lead at the summit to nine points ahead of second-placed Kamuzu Barracks.

However, the 15-time champions have two games in hand and have eight games overall to finish the season.

The Blantyre-based Bullets look certain to defend their title for the 16th time and a record fourth in a row for coach Kalisto Pasuwa.

In another game, Eagles beat Silver Strikers 1-0 courtesy of Gaddie Chirwa’s strike in Lilongwe.

In other games played on Sunday, Zeliat Nkhoma’s brace handed Kamuzu Barracks a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Sable Farming.

Elsewhere, Ekwendeni Hammers saw off Karonga United 4-0 at Mzuzu Stadium in the Northern Regin whereas Mighty Tigers lost 1-0 away to Dedza Dynamos in the Central Region.

The league comprises 16 teams, and the three bottom ones at the end of the season are relegated to the second-tier Premier Division.
