Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has praised former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Godfrey Walusimbi who has retired from active football.
Onyango described Walusimbi as one of the best left-backs to have emerged from the Uganda football fraternity.
“Enjoy your retirement, Godfrey Walusimbi. What a career you have had and no doubt one of the best left-backs to ever don the Uganda Cranes jersey (Cranes Class of 2017 and 2019. It was a pleasure being your captain,” Onyango said.
AMAKHOSI STINT
The defender played for just one season before Amakhosi deregistered him to create room for Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
Walusimbi had joined Chiefs on a three-year contract following his switch from Gor Mahia in the Kenyan Premier League.
He eventually signed for Albanian side KF Vilaznia after leaving Amakhosi.
Walusimbi launched his professional career back home at SC Villa before crossing the borders to Kenya to play for Gor Mahia.
FAREWELL MESSAGE
In a statement released on Tuesday, Walusimbi confirmed that he was calling time on his career.
“I have resolved to officially retire from professional football as a player,” he said in a statement.
“I am extremely grateful for the experience, relationship and exposure the game brought to me.”
The defender represented the Cranes at the 2017 and 2019 AFCON editions.
He earned 105 caps in a career that spanned a decade with the Cranes.
Walusimbi retired from the national team a few years ago, saying he had done his part.
The roving left-back Walusimbi has now completely retired at an early age of 33 for a defender.
Walusimbi has joined former Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje in retiring from actively playing football.
Onyango recently graced the testimonial matches for Mawejje, who had a stint with Golden Arrows in South Africa.
Walusimbi, Mawejje and Onyango were part of the golden generation of Ugandan footballers to have taken the Cranes back to AFCON finals after many years in the wilderness.
