Eswatini turns to rich hunting ground

Former AmaZulu striker Mkhokheli Dube believes Eswatini will be a rich hunting ground over the next 10 days.

The country hosts the COSAFA Under 20 Youth Championships from 7 to 17 October 2022.

Dube also featured for Zimbabwe’s Under 20 team between 2000 and 2003. He eventually played his football in the US’ Major Soccer League and later in the PSL for Usuthu.

With a few African leagues having television contracts and games being played online, he is convinced the tournament is “a great opportunity for those boys”. The annual tournament roars to life on Friday.

GOOD PLATFORM

“You’ll have scouts from across the world at that tournament. In the past, we’ve had players get career breakthroughs after playing in the COSAFA youth tournaments.

“It’s a good platform because scouts are looking out for your 18, 19-year-olds to take to their teams,” he told FARPost.

Several local teams, including Mamelodi Sundowns, are sending scouts to the tournament.

Tinashe Nengomasha, Knox Mtizwa, Gerald Phiri Jnr and Arohasina Andrianarimanana all earned moves after the competition.

Andrianarimanana, popularly known as Dax, did well at the COSAFA Cup in 2018 and signed for Kaizer Chiefs.

COSAFA CEO Sue Destombes said the tournament was a massive platform for youngsters to earn life-changing moves.

“Scouts are coming from Italy and eastern Europe to look for talent. This is part of development,” she told the media.

SUSPENDED

COSAFA signed a partnership with La Liga a few months ago. At least 12 countries are expected to participate in the 2022 edition, with Zimbabwe and Madagascar set to miss out.

The Young Warriors miss after Zimbabwe was suspended by FIFA, while Madagascar had challenges bringing their team.

Somhlolo National Stadium and Mavuso Sports Centre will host the tournament, whose final is set for October 16.
