Zesco’s Songa to face Royal AM after shining at COSAFA Under 20
Winger Songa Chipyoka has joined Zesco United from the 2022 COSAFA Under 20 Cup ahead of Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup date against Royal AM.
Songa is doing a balancing act for club and country this weekend in both the CAF Confederation Cup in Durban and COSAFA U20 Cup in Eswatini.
The winger was in action on Friday for Zambia when they beat Mauritius 3-0 in their opening Group A match at the COSAFA Cup that Eswatini is hosting from October 7-16.
JETTING IN
“Songa Chipyoka will jet in at 7.05 pm and join the team ahead of tomorrow’s match,” Zesco spokesperson Desmond Katongo told FARPost from Durban on Saturday.
“He will definitely join us and then head back to Eswatini on Monday as we also depart for Lusaka.”
Zesco arrived in Durban on Wednesday night for Sunday’s second-round, first-leg match against Royal AM at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Songa joins the Zesco camp following a very productive Friday in Eswatini. He scored Zambia’s opening goal from the penalty spot in the 21st minute to put Young Chipolopolo one-nil into the break.
Rickson Ngambi then scored a late brace to send Young Chipolopolo top of Group A. But it didn’t end there for Songa, who also took home the Man of the Match Award for his exploits in that win over Mauritius.
MOTIVATED
“It [the award] has motivated me, and I was thinking about it all night and thanked God for it. It is a very big boost for my morale. If I am given an opportunity to play tomorrow, I will do my best,” Songa said.
Meanwhile, Zambia will miss Songa’s services on Sunday when they face hosts Eswatini in a penultimate Group A match that could decide who goes through to the semifinals.
Zambia leads Group A on three points, tied with second-placed Eswatini, who beat Botswana 2-1 in their opening fixture on Friday.
