Pelembe believes Royal AM can defy odds…compete on both fronts
Seasoned winger Elias Pelembe believes Royal AM can continue to defy the odds and compete strongly domestically and in Africa.
Pelembe said this when asked about how Royal AM were approaching the DStv Premiership and CAF Confederation Cup assignments.
The former Bidvest Wits star said they believe they cannot go all the way on both fronts.
“We can go as far as possible because for me, we just need to be focused on both of them and take it game-by-game,” Pelembe tells FARPost.
The 38-year-old admitted that it would not be a stroll in the park sailing past Zesco in the Confederation Cup.
PELEMBE CONTINUES…
“The first thing to think about is the next game, which is not going to be easy as the Confederation Cup is our first experience,” he said.
“In the league, last season we were number three but we are here. We believe we can go far,”
The Mozambican has played a key role in Royal AM progression from the Confederation Cup preliminary round to the first round.
He scored when Royal AM beat Mbabane Highlanders 1-0 in Durban to sail through 1-0 on aggregate.
The first leg played in Eswatini had ended goalless.
Royal AM drew 0-0 at home against former Zambia champions Zesco on Sunday.
The Durban-based side is now preparing to face Zesco at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday.
Any scoring draw at bare minimum would be enough to see Royal AM through to the group stages.
At home, Royal AM are in position seven of the DStv Premiership standings, six points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Zesco coach Munamba Numba has since told the club’s website that he was concerned with his team’s profligacy in front of goal.
“Our greatest concern is the striking force because we have created a lot of chances, but we are failing to get the goals,” he said.
Numba said he takes comfort in the fact that his team did not concede in the first leg.
“The soothing part is that we didn’t concede. Otherwise, it would have been better to get a win. We have a lot of work as we go back. We need to work hard and ensure that we win the return leg,” he said.
