Top football agent Mike Makaab has suggested that some Orlando Pirates players could be struggling to master the team’s system of play.
Makaab said he was not blaming anyone but it appears the 3-4-3 system, which coach Jose Riveiro is using, is difficult to master.
“This system does not suit Pirates… I’m not blaming anyone, it’s purely my observation,” he tweeted on Friday.
Makaab’s comments came after Pirates drew 1-1 with AmaZulu on Friday in what was the Buccaneers’ third consecutive draw.
Pirates are struggling to speak fluently the vocabulary of goals as they have scored seven goals and let in six so far this season in the league.
The CEO of Prosport International observed that he had no right to criticize from outside the team, but he still has reservations with the formation.
“Let me rephrase what I said, because I gave no right to criticize from the outside looking in, the 3-4-3 system is not easy to master and needs certain types of players for it to be really effective. I’ll leave out at that. Good night beautiful people!,” he said.
Makaab then stated system he thinks could suit the Buccaneers.
“I’ve always preferred a 4-3-3 system, 4-1-2-3 or 4-2-1-3 depending on the approach to the game,” he said.
Apart from being a top agent, Makaab also coached Pirates in the mid 1990’s and lead them to the CAF Champions League trophy in 1995.
Pirates started the season well under Riveiro but they have been pegged back by the draws.
The Soweto giants have drawn four of their 11 DStv Premiership games and lie on 15th place with 16 points.
The Buccaneers are three points behind leaders and holders Mamelodi Sundowns who have played fewer, nine games.
Pirates strengthened their squad with players such as Kermit Erasmus who joined from Sundowns and came to the rescue with a goal of Friday.
