Marumo Gallants assistant coach Raymond Mdaka has cautioned the club’s players against complacency despite their progress in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Mdaka pointed out two areas they need to work on as they play in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages.
Gallants progressed to the next stage of the CAF club competition at the expense of Madagascar side Elgeco Plus after winning 4-1 on aggregate.
They won 3-1 away from home before picking a 1-0 win at home.
Mdaka was not pleased with the performance, insisting they had to approach games better in future.
“We should have reversed it. At least it should have been 1-0 away and 3-0 at home,” he told the club’s media.
He believes that if they are to progress beyond the group stages, they will need to avoid complacency and ensure they score as many goals.
NOT IMPRESSED
“The performance was not that much good. We realised that they could not give us problems, but for us to call it a good game, it means we should have scored, and when we don’t score, it means we didn’t play well.
“They [the players] were complacent because it gets into their minds to think ‘they cannot harm me, I’m safe’.
“It’s not a good thing. You must always score. Scoring should become a norm; once you start scoring, even when you go to the next game, you continue scoring.”
Mdaka sat on the bench as head coach Dan Malesela does not have the requisite papers to do so.
Malesela recently reunited with Gallants after cutting ties with Royal AM.
GALLANTS SHIFTING FOCUS
While they will be happy with their CAF progress, their position in the domestic league is not an encouraging one.
The Limpopo side is 15th after nine games. They have only won one match, drew six times and lost twice.
They are tied on nine points with 16th-placed Swallows and know too well that they need to start winning games.
