Ex-Cape Town City’s Mapfumo training with Leopards
Ex-Cape Town City striker Douglas Mapfumo is set to complete a move to the Motsepe Foundation Championship club Black Leopards.
Mapfumo is a free agent after parting ways with Cape Town City in January this year. The 22-year-old started to train with Lidoda Duvha last week.
Although the striker has not signed yet, indications are that Leopards are looking for a target man.
Lidoda Duvha who languishes third from bottom have struggled to score this season. In their eight matches, Leopards have only scored four times.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw against Magesi on Sunday, assistant coach Morgan Shivambu confirmed that Zimbabwean forward Mapfumo as well as former Venda Football Academy forward Rophney ‘Rover’ Hlungwane were training with the club.
“We have two strikers that are training with us Rover (Rophney Hlungwane) and the big man from Zimbabwe Douglas (Mapfumo),” he confirmed.
HOW MAPFUMO AND HLUNGWANE CAN HELP
“So, I think one of them once we have sat down with the management will sign. Because if you can check upfront, I don’t have a big man.
“But those two players are almost big and one will sign so that they help us change the dynamic of the game.
“The players that we have now their strength are pace but with one of those two they can hold the ball so it will definitely be a plus,” added Shivambu.
THE DHLAKAMA IMPACT
Shivambu insists newly appointed coach Rodwell Dhlakama has fit in nicely into the setup.
“The guys are responding well because if you check, the play is more the same as we were playing. He understands how we play and never came and wanted to change what was working.
“The players are also adapting very quickly to what he wants. So, it’s a plus for the team.”
Dhlakama is yet to officially take over as he awaits his work permit.
