Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Tyren Arendse has expressed concerns over several Cape Town teams in the South African football top-flight.
Arendse pinpointed the issue of selling Cape Town clubs’ statuses and moving the clubs to other provinces in the country.
So far, Cape Town has two teams [Cape Town City and Stellenbosch] in the DStv Premiership and one team [Cape Town Spurs] in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, with other teams being sold due to financial reasons.
ARENDSE SPEAKS…
“You know there is so much talent in Cape Town and there are only two teams in the PSL,” Arendse told FARPost.
“So, where is this talent going? Who is going to give these boys an opportunity to play professional football?
“Actually I think it is sad with Cape Town teams getting relegated and Cape Town teams moving clubs to other different parts of the country.
The football legend did not just talk about the issue but provided some ideas on how the matter could be handled in order to overcome it.
SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM
‘You know, Cape Town needs to sit with the clubs’ bosses and see what they can do to help them to compete,” added the ex-Santos man.
“If you compete you will be able to stay in the PSL or get a promotion to the top flight.”
“Another thing will be to make sure that we have enough teams in Cape Town because of the high number of quality players we have here.”
Arendse is currently the coach of the Cape Town Spurs development team [Under-14] following a three-year break from football after he hung up his boots back in July 2017.
He is also part of the MTN8 legends [ambassador] alongside Josta Dladla, Lucky Lekgwathi, Fabian McCarthy, Hlompho Kekana, Morgan Gould, Njabulo Manqana and Brilliant Khuzwayo.
