Moses Mabhida could host first-ever New Year’s Eve clash
Moses Mabhida Stadium could play host to the first-ever PSL New Year’s Eve clash, with indications negotiations are at an advanced stage.
Golden Arrows are set to welcome Kaizer Chiefs on December 31 at Princess Magogo Stadium in a DStv Premiership clash.
However, FARPost has been reliably informed that there are talks about moving the game to Moses Mabhida.
Concerns are that with Princess Magogo, transport may be an issue. Again, Chiefs attract massive crowds, and the facility may prove too small on the day.
According to insiders within the tourism industry, there are talks with Abafana Bes’thende to move the game to the bigger and more central 2010 World Cup Stadium.
“There are talks about moving Arrows and Chiefs’ game to Moses Mabhida, but nothing has been agreed upon; the venue wants the match, but it all depends on the host team,” a source told FARPost.
The source added that the move was seen as good for business and an opportunity to try new things by the city’s tourism department. Plans are afoot to grow the city’s sports tourism.
There is also a notion that revellers attending the annual music event Fact Durban Rocks at the People’s Park could also be enticed to attend the game.
The stadium manager, Vusi Mazibuko, refused to comment on the possibility of the game being hosted at Moses Mabhida, saying only the PSL and the hosting team were allowed to respond to questions.
“We can’t comment on that; that is for PSL and the hosting team; our focus is preparing the upcoming big matches, including the MTN8 final, CAF Confederations Cup and league games,” said Mazibuko.
An announcement will be made after the MTN8 final on November 5. Moses Mabhida is set to host that game.
Chiefs have played some of their home games in the coastal city and would likely have the bigger crowd should the game be shifted to Moses Mabhida.
