Monare slams social media for peddling lies

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabang Monare has slammed social media’s ‘keyboard warriors’ for peddling misinformation and lies regarding his future during the pre-season.

The Pirates midfielder was speaking about speculation that he was leaving the club, with AmaZulu touted as a potential destination.

His contract situation dominated headlines during the transfer window before he joined the squad for pre-season.

Monare had not been a regular player for the Buccaneers, creating doubts about his future at the end of the last campaign.

Besides AmaZulu, SuperSport United were reportedly keen on his signature. The midfielder has since addressed the confusion, revealing that the club had no intentions of releasing him.

“Well, I have always been an Orlando Pirates player. There has always been something happening in the media,” Monare told the media in Durban.

Monare says he never left Pirates

“There are social media people who just spread lies. They are given platforms to do so. I didn’t focus on that because I knew the truth.”

The former Bidvest Wits star said the rumours did not affect him as he knew what was happening.
“Honestly, I did not think the situation had anything to do with me, so there was no lesson to be learned.”

“I was not being asked about my future because I have always been a Pirates player. The only meeting I had was about what needed to happen on performances and regular meetings.

“They [family] did not have to react. They phoned to understand the situation, unlike other people who just run with things from hearing from others, not from me.”

Monare further admitted that the club extended his contract at the end of last season. His contract ended in June, as he signed two years back in 2020 when he joined from Wits.

“Yes, I can say my contract was extended.”
