Al Ahly fans happy as Tau comes off bench in league win
Al Ahly fans welcomed Percy Tau after he came off the bench in the 1-0 win over Aswan on Sunday.
The club’s website says the supporters were excited that Tau had recovered from injury.
“The Al Ahly fans in the stands were happy to receive Percy Tau. He joined the game in the last minutes after a long injury,” the website reports.
It was a long-awaited return to action for Tau. The South African had been on the sidelines for many months due to injuries.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star did not have much impact on the game. He was on the pitch in the last four minutes.
Tau had replaced Mohamed Magdi with three points safe in the bag for the former CAF Champions League holders.
However, his return to competitive action should be good news for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
The Lion of Judah is a key player for Bafana Bafana, who have 2023 AFCON qualifiers ahead of them.
On Sunday, Al Maaloul’s 16th-minute goal from the penalty spot won Al Ahly the game.
Shady Hussein had won the penalty after being fouled by Aswan keeper.
The victory made it four consecutive wins in all competitions this season for Al Ahly.
The Reds are enjoying a new lease of life under Swiss coach Marcel Koller.
Al Ahly have not conceded in the four games in which they have scored six goals.
Koller started his reign with a 1-0 win over US Monastir of Tunisia. He followed that with a 3-0 victory in the CAF Champions League reverse fixture.
Al Ahly continued their sound run this time around in the league. The Cairo giants beat Ismaily 1-0 in the Premier League’s opener.
Al Ahly are in second place with six points from two games, at par with Zamalek.
Goal aggregate separates Al Ahly from the cross-town rivals Zamalek. The defending champions Zamalek have scored more goals, and they, too, are yet to let in a goal.
Zamalek beat Ceramic 2-0 on Sunday to cement their top spot.
