Shonga lurking behind early top scorers

Justin Shonga is not far behind in the very early stages of the 2022/2023 top scorers race after inspiring Nkwazi to victory over the weekend.

Nkwazi beat struggling Chambishi 2-0 at home in Lusaka last Saturday to record their second win of the 2022/2023 FAZ Super League campaign from nine rounds of matches played so far in the new campaign.

Shonga scored Nkwazi’s opening goal in the 44th minute, while his teammate Christopher Zulu was on target with the Lusaka club’s final goal in the 63rd minute.

The Chipolopolo striker is tied on three league goals with teammate Zulu.

Shonga’s early form sees him score three goals from five games he has so far featured for Nkwazi.

He rejoined his old club as a free agent in September after leaving them in 2018 for Orlando Pirates.

Shonga is now two goals behind early joint leaders Lubinda Mundia of Prison Leopards and Power Dynamos striker Kennedy Musonda who are tied on five goals.

Interestingly, Shonga’s goals have all come in Nkwazi’s only two league wins of the season.

Shonga earlier scored a brace in a 4-0 away win over bottom-placed Buildcon three games ago on October  2 in what was his only second league back at Nkwazi.

Meanwhile, Shonga’s weekend exploits came just four days after another returnee from the SA PSL made a statement.

Ex-Amazulu attacker Augustine Mulenga scored his debut goal for his new Zambian club Napsa Stars, last Wednesday.

Mulenga, who was Shonga’s former clubmate at Pirates, scored Napsa’s opening goal in a 2-1 home win over nine-time champions Zesco United.

The Zesco game was Mulenga’s second league game for Napsa.

Mulenga started last Saturday again but was not on target in Napsa’s 1-0 home win over Kabwe Warriors.

But Mulenga has an opportunity to emulate Shonga this weekend when Napsa visits winless the club the latter opened his Zambian account against.

Napsa visit bottom-placed Buildcon on Sunday in Ndola, who have just 1 point from nine matches played.
