Joe Allen in race for fitness ahead of World Cup

Wales midfielder Joe Allen is racing to recover from an injury that could see him miss the FIFA World Cup.

The 32-year-old has been on the sidelines for two months after suffering a hamstring injury against Hull on September 17.

Swansea boss Russell Martin confirmed that Allen is recovering well. However, he won’t feature in any match as they want him to be ready for the Wales World Cup opener. Wales start off against the United States on 21 November.

“The only positive is he has a chance of being ready for the World Cup for Wales,” Martin said.

“It’s about getting him ready. For trying to give him every opportunity to be ready for his country to play on the biggest stage. Something he’s played a huge part in getting them there.

“Now, we’ve had to accept, or almost push Joe into not trying to get ready for us. If we can get him ready for the World Cup and he does well for Wales, he comes back to us in a better place.”

Martin further revealed that there have been some complications in Allen’s injury that kept him out for so long.

“There’s been some mistakes along the way with his injury which is frustrating. But he’s on the right path now.

“Joe is disappointed not to be playing for us and it’s been a real struggle for him. It’s been a battle for him, it’s been a huge source of frustration and disappointment for us. He’s been desperate to get ready for Swansea and Wales,” Martin added.

Allen will play a vital part in the Wales squad, he brings in a lot of experience in the midfield. He will be aiming to replicate his performances he displayed at the 2016 Euros. Allen was named the player of the tournament.
