Mulenga steals the show from Shonga & Co

Clifford Mulenga stole the spotlight over the weekend from his fellow ex-PSL Zambian stars who are back campaigning in the 2022/2023 FAZ Super League season.

The ex-Jomo Cosmos attacker on Saturday inspired Forest Rangers to a home victory in what was one of only three league wins posted in the nine fixtures played after 10 rounds of matches played this season.

Clifford converted a 75th-minute penalty in Forest Rangers’ 1-0 home win over third-placed Prison Leopards on Saturday at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola.

It was Clifford’s second goal of the season.

Forest, who have lost just one match this season, stay put at number four despite the win and are tied on 17 points with Prison and are four points behind leaders Red Arrows.

SHONGA FAILS TO SCORE

On the same day away at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola, striker Justin Shonga played the opening 78 minutes of 13th placed Nkwazi’s 0-0 away draw against Nchanga Rangers, who sit at number 10.

In Kabwe, ex-Baroka FC goalkeeper Mwenya Chibwe made his full debut for Zesco United on Saturday when the mid-table side finished 0-0 away to fourth-from-bottom side Kabwe Warriors.

Chibwe joined the 9-time Zambian champions in July as a free agent on a two-year deal.

And on Sunday in Ndola, ex-Amazulu and Orlando Pirates midfielder Augustine Mulenga made his third successive start for his new club Napsa Stars.

Mulenga came off in the 70th minute of Napsa’s 0- away draw to last-placed and winless Buildcon.

This was Mulenga’s fourth game, in which period he has scored one goal since joining the Lusaka club as a free agent in early October.

Mulenga’s Napsa coach and ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder Perry Mutapa blamed the draw on sudden rainy conditions at The Trade Fair Grounds.

“So I won’t fault the players; you could even see Mulenga couldn’t play, but we kept him on even in the second half because he could do anything at any time,” Mutapa said.

“But it was difficult; it was a game that could have been won via set pieces.”
