Usuthu boss Zungu makes huge Pirates admission

AmaZulu boss Sandile Zungu has made a huge Orlando Pirates admission ahead of the MTN8 final on Saturday afternoon in Durban.

In not so many words, Zungu admitted that he is a Pirates fan, while revealing that he was interested in acquiring the status of the Soweto giants.

However, Zungu says he knew buying the PSL status of Pirates was mission impossible; hence he opted for Usuthu, taking over the club from Dr Patrick Sokhela.

“It was a very easy decision; I had wanted to be in soccer for quite some time,” Zungu told FARPost.

“I didn’t find the right vehicle to unlock the doors for that. I grew up supporting Orlando Pirates all my life.

PIRATES NOT FOR SALE…

“For me, the only two teams that made sense to buy were AmaZulu and Pirates. I knew Pirates was not for sale, so to buy AmaZulu made sense because I come from KZN, and I know the passion.”

“My entire family– father, mother, and uncles are all AmaZulu. It’s only us – my generation – who were born to the rise of Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates.

“We were attracted to those brands because they were winning. When the opportunity came to buy the team from the Sokhelas, I jumped at it,” added Zungu.

Usuthu are set to take on the club Zungu supported growing up, Pirates, in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida.

Zungu wants to end the club’s 30-year drought by winning the top eight competition, as he has previously reiterated that Usuthu must win a trophy this season.

The club has already parted ways with a coach, Brandon Truter, after a poor run of form, which saw AmaZulu fail to register a win in more than five matches in all competitions

“AmaZulu has not won any significant trophy since 1992,” he said.

“You can imagine how important it would be to get that trophy. It would re-establish us as a trophy-winning team. I can’t wait to lift that cup.”
